WCAG 2.2 Level AA

The rebuilt Cow Missing website is being developed with WCAG 2.2 Level AA as its accessibility target. Accessibility is addressed in the site itself rather than relying on a third-party accessibility overlay or widget.

Accessibility built into the interface.

• Keyboard-accessible navigation and interactive controls.
• Visible and usable focus states.
• Responsive layouts that reflow on mobile devices and at increased zoom.
• Semantic headings, landmarks, labels, and descriptive links.
• Touch-friendly controls and readable color contrast.

Historical material presents unique challenges.

Cow Missing contains a large and growing collection of historical photographs, video, audio, documents, and other media. Alternative text is used for meaningful archive images, and galleries and lightboxes are being designed for keyboard and assistive-technology use.

Older video and historical material may not always have complete captions, transcripts, or descriptions when first added. The site architecture is designed so those resources can be added and improved as they become available.

Accessibility is part of archive maintenance.

Accessibility is reviewed as the archive grows and as new page types and interactive features are introduced. Improvements may be made as standards, browser behavior, assistive technologies, and the archive itself evolve.
